[Pravrajika] Atmaprana [the first Sannyasini (Hindu nun of the Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa]: Can we say Dattatreya was the guru?
Swamiji: Yes, the guru. In Dattatreya 'treya' means 'three', and 'datta' means 'these'. He was definitely a god because the four dogs used to go about with him - the four Vedas. The Vedas serve him like a dog.
Atmaprana: Do you remember something about silence in the story?
Swamiji: That was Dakshinamurti.
Atmaprana: That was a form of the guru?
Swamiji: That scripture gives it to you nicely: mudras [(usually) finger or hand gestures and positions to redirect flow of prana (Chi or Ki)]. They tell you what sickness that mudra can prevent. They describe different mudra: jnana [knowledge] mudra and others. There are certain things in your body that are there, and that is why I want you to interpret that into English so we can bring out our own version.
Especially Vani [later Pravrajika Ishtaprana - the 2nd Sannyasini (Hindu nun) of the Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa] and Shri [Pravrajika Atmaprana] should read up these ladies stories and start from now preparing a nice literature. Later on when you print them they will be glorious things.
Sati Anusaya doesn't only mean serving at home. Today the factory worker women can be satis - doing it for the benefit of the husband and the children. You can bring it to a modern concept but not losing the modesty and faithfulness.
But realisation will never come until you saturate your mind with the thoughts of these things - just God, God, God, and once you have saturated your mind, it comes like that. [Swamiji snaps fingers]
